Bring stories to life with National Storytelling Week

Once upon a time, classrooms all over the UK burst into a wondrous display of vibrant colour, when a whole week devoted to storytelling and tales came to pass.

And the children sat on the carpet wrapt in a world of imagination as they watched words leap from the page when their teachers brought the ancient art of storytelling to life.

Indeed, it was from there that their love of reading could truly begin…

National Storytelling Week is just around the corner and with it comes the chance to encourage a greater, more in depth, love of reading and storytelling in our young ones.

This year marks the 19th year of National Storytelling Week (January 26 - February 2). It’s an event organised by the Society for Storytelling which is held with the aim of promoting the oral tradition of storytelling.

National Storytelling Week takes place in many locations across the UK, in a host of venues, including many schools. And, as we all know, telling a story is much more than just reading words on a page.

There are many opportunities to bring stories to life during National Storytelling Week and lots of different ways for teachers and teaching assistants to include more storytelling in the classroom.

From the use of puppets, artwork and props to turn taking, acting out the story, or simply the use of funny voices, children love to visualise the words they are hearing and to be given the chance to enjoy the tales and develop their imagination.

At Paper Plus, we have a range of school supplies available to teachers and teaching assistants in primary schools, nurseries, pre-schools and schools for children with special needs. Many of them are designed to help support events such as National Storytelling Week and to help teaching staff turn them into a truly memorable experience for young ones of all ages and abilities.
